As an active performer of orchestral, solo, chamber and contemporary music in the Greater Boston area, Owen Boyd is a double bassist who prides himself on maintaining a wide variety of styles and settings. His background consists of performances ranging from venues such as Boston Symphony Hall and Harvard Business School’s Klarman Hall to self-curated solo appearances at the Congregational Church of Topsfield and the Destiny Lofts in Back Bay.
Current performing with the Cape Symphony and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Mr. Boyd completed his Master’s Degree from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, where he studied with former Boston Symphony Principal Bassist Ed Barker. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute, where he received the Azalia H. Thomas Prize in Music Theory. He has appeared as Principal Bass at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, and was awarded first prize in both the solo competition and mock audition from the University of New Mexico’s Summer Music Institute. In addition to working with Upbeat New Hampshire, Mr. Boyd also teaches privately, and has coached chamber music and sectionals for New England Conservatory’s Preparatory School and Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras.
